Your Nomination

Teacher's Name:

Phillip Hur

Grade:

K

School Name:

Citizens of the World - Silver Lake

School City:

Los Angeles

School State:

CA

Teacher's Bio

Philip Hur is a first year teacher at Citizens of the World Charter School in Los Angeles, California. He teaches a public school classroom of 24 kindergartners who come from diverse backgrounds—ethnically and economically. Using a constructivist approach, his students achieve traditional academic milestones by building on their own conclusions and insights. An approach heavy in project-based learning requires him to be an inspirational guide and use different approaches to find the teachable moment with each individual child. Hur has taught students how to tell stories, build their own game boards, and study the brain.

I am proud to support Mr. Philip as his unselfish teaching methods have made dramatic strides in the classroom. This is a man who, without much, has accomplished much. Can you imagine with $10,000?
Thank you Mr. Philip!

Last time I came to visit, I read books to my grand-daughter. Only a few months later, she was reading them to me. Slowly... But reading... And wanting to figure out more. A good teacher changes everyone's perspective.

You seem so real, down to earth, and in tune with the needs of your students. We all come from diverse backgrounds and we all learn in different ways, and it seems that you really understand that concept. As a fellow first year teacher, you are an inspiration for me and for all teachers and adults in general. Good luck!

Mr Philip is wonderful. Our son Atticus absolutely adores him. He considers him his best friend in his kindergarden class. When I come to pick Atticus up from school he is often sitting right next to Mr Philip at his desk. I think Atticus thinks he is Mr Philip's assistant. We can never leave the classroom without the most enormous hug for Mr Philip. Atticus started kindergarten without even knowing his alphabet and now is reading and writing at kindergarten level. I love to watch Mr Philip teach the children. He is so funny and engaged with them. I love it when he gets things wrong on purpose, the children think it is so funny and enjoy telling him the correct answer. He really enjoys being with them and seems to really love what he does. He cares so much for all the children in his class and every child I see him come into contact with. He finds fun ways for them to learn. He has a true gift for teaching and is a natural with children. We feel so lucky to have had such a great kindergarten experience with Mr Philip for our son Atticus.

We had our parent teacher conference with Mr. Philip today. I trust Mr. Philip dearly when it comes to my child's education. He has a firm grasp on a boy heavy classroom and is to be commended not only on his teaching skills but ability to do so much with so little funding. The grant that we are voting for isn't icing on the cake....unfortunately it is required to make sure our children experience a bare minimum classroom situation. That said my almost 6 year old came home speaking to the values of respect and the meaning of the word prejudice. We truly are building a Citizen of the World! Thank you Mr. Philip for doing such an awesome job with so little.

An example of why Mr. Philip is one of those above and beyond teachers: My daughter was out sick for 4 days and missed the start of a science lab to journal sprouting seeds. Mr. Philip reached out by email, planted her seed for her so she

so she'd be in sync with the rest of her class, and sent photos to share with us at home. Her first day back, she stood uncertain and hesitant at the classroom door. He stopped everything he was doing, greeted her and told her he needed her help with the seeds. Rather than simply report on what the class had been doing, he asked her all sorts of questions...did she have theories about how seeds would grow best...what kind of seed did she think these were? He gave her his undivided attention and allowed her to have the experience she'd missed. Her eyes lit up. With those generous moments, he'd reconnected her to her class and reignited her love learning. Thank you, Mr. Philip.

His primary role is that of an educator, yet he knows how to also befriend his students. The children know their boundaries and feel safe in developing creatively and academically within these parameters. It takes a pretty amazing teacher to be able to foster this kind of environment!

I remember my kindergarten teacher as a stern wrangler of kids she could never control. Her name escapes me, but her scowl will always be with me. "Sit there! Do this and don't do that."

More than 40 years later, I'm delighted to see my daughter having the time of her life as she learns... Wanting to learn more. The right teacher is everything... And the environment he creates.... Safety to make mistakes... To explore... To learn by doing... is vital.

Watch his video and see why you'll wish you had Philip around when you were a kid.

Mister Philip teaches at a school without iPads and without NASA equipment and without hardwood floors. He doesn't need those things to engage his students who come from diverse backgrounds, both ethnically and economically. His school is a scrappy public school in the state of California which ranks 46th out of the 50 states in per pupil funding.

Philip is a gifted teacher. It's as simple as that. You only have to talk to the kids in his charge to know.

We can talk about curriculum or school environment.... And these are important. But in the end, it's the individual teachers with the ability to "reach" kids that makes all the diference.

My daughter is very lucky to have started her school experience on such a high note.
