Emily Volkert is a Teach For America corps member who teaches a bilingual 3rd grade class at Newlon Elementary School in Denver, Colorado. With 98 percent of the students receiving free or reduced lunch services, Volkert saw a need for student mentorship and initiated a college pen pal program where she has tapped into her students' willingness to learn and directed them toward a goal they might have thought impossible to achieve: going to college.
