An educator for 17 years, Sachiko Miyaji currently teaches second grade, holds a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, and has served in many capacities as a classroom teacher, Instructional Coach for mathematics, and math team coach. Considered a leader among peers, she was instrumental in implementing the STEAM initiative in the primary grades at Melrose Elementary Math Science Technology Magnet in Los Angeles to inspire students to build, create, design, and problem solve through the Engineering Design Process (EDP), Project Based Learning and Cognitively Guided Instruction in Mathematics (CGI). Recognized as an outstanding, collaborative and reflective teacher in education, Sachiko recently earned certification as a National Board Certified Teacher (Class of 2012), and is currently a fellow in the Cotsen Foundation’s Art of Teaching program.

I love the manipulatives she uses to teach the kids math. Actually seeing the little blocks making 10s and 100s really helps the kids.

"Math Sprints, Math Sprints, Math Sprints!" Ms. Miyaji introduced these to my son in the 2010/2011 school year (it was his 1st year at Melrose) At first he found her Math Sprints hard, but then with time he found the sprints challenging, competitive but FUN! He always wanted to do better the next time, or was pleased when he did well. Ms. Miyaji always motivated him (and the other students), plus she helped him build his confidence in regards to math, science, and the other subjects.
He's in 4th grade, is now part of the Melrose School Math Team, and he LOVES the math team. He told me last night "Mom, I love the Melrose Math team. We work so well together! I love it"
Ms. Miyaji deserves credit for his love for math& science (plus of course the other incredible teachers he's had at Melrose)
Thank you Ms. Miyaji for inspiring my son, and all the Melrose students.

Miss Miyagi is a wonderful teacher who even knows not only her students but every kid in school. She was not a teacher of my kids but still she knows them by first name and even their scores. That just shows how engaged and involved she is as a teacher, not just of her class but of every student in the school.

Ms. Sachiko Miyaji Is a most incredible, innovative teacher. I am most fortunate to be her grade-level partner; believe me, there has never been a dull moment. We work collaboratively, constantly planning and reflecting upon our students, their needs and how we can improve our practice. She is an amazingly knowledgeable educator and consistently finding ways to challenge students in their learning. Ms. MiyajI is not only a remarkable teacher, she also challenges other faculty members to be in a never-ending quest of knowledge in order to provide all students at our school (and others) with lessons that assist our future generation with skills needed so they may excel.

I have had the honor of working with Ms. Miyaji for the last four years as her principal. She is an extraordinary teacher who puts her mind, heart, and soul into educating her second grade writers, scientists, engineers, artists, etc. She has a lasered-focused on her students' achievement while maintaining a caring learning environment that accelerates their social-emotional growth. Her classroom is a think tank/ laboratory of reflective, deep learning. Ms. Miyaji is a role model and leader for the entire Melrose ES Mathematics/ Science/ Technology Magnet community. My son enjoyed Ms. Miyaji's Math Drills when in her 2nd grade classroom. Before Melrose, he hadn't been introduced to her method of teaching math & science. He's now in the 4th grade. He now LOVES and enjoys math plus science. He says he still misses her weekly Math Drills!
Also, she strongly encouraged & inspired him with his journal writing skills. He has since enjoyed writing on his own!
