Madeleine’s changemaker curriculum allows students to engage with moral questions at a young age and is based on knowledge of and research in child psychology and teaching philosophy. She herself exemplifies the qualities of conscientiousness, openness, honesty and acute thinking that are present in her classroom. Through Madeleine’s work, readers and educational institutions also learn a way in which universal values are actualized in specific communities through children’s and society’s creativity.

What's exciting about this is it's not just Kindergarten that teaches our kids about change makers and how to take action to solve problems. This is a deep thread in all of our classrooms and in each grade. 8th grade did change makers before Kindergarten, in fact. And our kids learn about the importance of service and how to be global citizens in each classroom. Go Prospect Sierra!

Another one of Madeleine's project is inspired by the work of Wangari Maathai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for replanting trees in Kenya. If Madeleine win s this award, she want to replant and restore the creek at Canyon Trail Park ( a home to many species, including Pacific Chorus Frogs) as well as plant in the urban areas around PS. The Peaceful Changemakers program that Madeleine created at our school has struck a deep chord with our 2nd grade daughter. She regularly comes home talking about Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr, Harriet Tubman, Ghandi and many lesser known peaceful activists spanning history and the globe. When I spoke of an act of unfairness that's been troubling me in our community, my daughter encouraged me to step forward, speak out and push for change. When your 7 year old prods you to be courageous and take on a cause, you know she has internalized the message and are reminded that, as parents, we must set an example to show our children that they should strive to make positive change. I'm now taking my daughter's suggestion and mobilizing support around something I believe in. Thanks, Madeleine, for teaching my daughter (and reminding me) that by speaking our truth and taking action we each can make a difference!

I admire Madeline's leadership in showing how to integrate so many important principles into her teaching and make them come alive and make sense for kids as young as Kindergartners. She seamlessly weaves together the teaching of empathy, environmental sustainability and caring for our earth, caring for each other and social justice, all mixed in with reading, writing, math, art, and more. This is learning at its best!

by Debzzz

Madeleine's curriculum teaches empathy as a foundational skill in one’s capacity to be what we call a “changemaker” in the world. If one doesn’t understand the feelings and perspectives of other people, it is difficult to be able to see through problems to solutions. Madeleine talks about empathy as an ability to understand the feelings and perspectives of others and to guide one’s actions accordingly. There is an active component of that and it is how you apply empathy in order to be a changemaker. Thanks Madeleine! This is a great foundation for these young children - building blocks for their growth and success in the future.

I believe the Changemakers curriculum more deeply roots the innate sense of justice that a child is born with and carries through life. As the song says, "you have to be taught to hate and fear." The deeply rooted desire for fairness will become an instinctive cue for a child to speak out when faced with injustice. These youngest among us are the Changemakers of tomorrow.

From the time Madeleine was a child she had empathy and an awareness of the world around her that amazed me! Now, as a teacher and a parent she combines years of exploring the world and her dedication to making the world better--who could ask for anything more in a teacher/human being?

Madeline was my kindergarten teacher. She made school more playful and fun. Once I got sick at school, and she stayed in the office with me until my mom got there, it was VERY comforting to me. EVERYONE should vote for...Madeline!!! from Devon.

This curriculum is wonderful! It allows the children to gradually imagine changes that need to be made in the world and how to make them. Are there any books you would you recommend for mothers to use?

What impresses me in Madeleine's curriculum is both its methodology and its thoughtful and innovative content, its emphasis not just on the how of teaching but on what it is important to teach.

My son had Madeleine in kindergarten last year. She and her partner were the best teachers I could possibly have imagined. Their class was everything I wanted for my son, and I am so grateful that he got to have such a rich experience during such a formative time. He learned to love learning, in no small part due to Madeleine

The changemaker curriculum is so important for the youngest among us. These important discussions will become a part of who they are, and not just something they are told to be. Madeleine Rogin has been in and out of my children's lives over the past several years; I have watched her grow as a teacher, as a mom as a person. She has a gift to share with our children, I encourage your support.

Madeleine is a wonderful teacher and her Changemakers curriculum had a huge impact on my son-- and he's not even in her class! Luckily, both kindergarten classrooms at our school implemented the Changemaker unit and it prompted so many thoughtful discussions with my son. Bravo and thank you, Madeleine!

What could be more important for our children to learn than empathy, and the power of individuals to make a positive difference in their worlds - as demonstrated by change-makers? We've seen first-hand the positive impact of Madeleine's great work on our son, one of her K students. Way to go!

It is so important that Madeleine's The Peaceful Changemakers Curriculum gets adopted nationwide. Personally, as a mother to a daughter in Kindergarten that learned about MLK, Jr in the traditional style (not using her curriculum), I learned first hand the shortcomings with the common traditional method. My daughter, her classmates, and kids nationwide would have benefited from Madeleine's innovative curriculum that age-appropriately addresses the complexity of race, and history in the true spirit of MLK Jr and other important change makers. Thank you Madeleine for creating a curriculum that empowers, engages and moves children - YOU are a change maker!

Madeleine is an inspiring person and a dedicated teacher. She brings enthusiasm, warmth, and innovation to her classroom every day. We feel so fortunate to have had Madeleine teach both of our sons (now in kindergarten and second grade) because she nurtures curiosity, compassion and a drive towards social action. We are truly impressed with the ideas that our sons discuss over family dinner about what it means to be a change maker, and how hard it can be to be different or to be the first--truly amazing and empathetic conversations that are rich in meaning and life learning.
